Stan says -

This presentation is a little bit different in style to my other photographic presentations. It discusses why photographers should consider doing abstract work, and how this might have a spin-off into their other day-to-day photographic work.  The presentation includes a discussion of what abstract art is, and whether there is truly such a thing as abstract photography. It makes comparisons between abstract art and abstract photography, and then go on to introduce the work of a few of the great abstract photographers of the past.

I then concentrate on how to create your own abstract images using some simple techniques that possibly haven’t occurred to you before. This part includes what to photograph and how to compose your work, before going on to develop some examples and ideas that you can try out for yourself. The presentation also includes tips for moving your images on from the basics to work that is much more striking. It also includes tips for presenting your abstract work.  Hopefully the presentation will introduce you to a few techniques that you may not have thought about before, including the lazy person’s photography of making abstract images while sitting at home watching TV!

I have been a photographer for almost as long as I can remember, having saved my pocket money for my first camera at the age of 8 or 9. I became seriously interested in photography back in 1976 when I bought my first SLR. Over the years since I have applied my photographic skills to my professional work in education. Photography has proved to be an all-consuming pastime too. Although my original degrees are in Biological Sciences, my Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Technology included a distinction in Print Design which has also provided an additional useful link with my photography.

Nowadays I describe myself as a creative digital photographer.  I am a member of the Royal Photographic Society and have been awarded a Fellowship (FRPS), the Society's highest honour.

I enjoy applying my interest in modern art to my photographic work.  I also greatly enjoy using Photoshop creatively to make new digital art, including still-life work with layers of texture. Often my images are much, much simpler to create.
